Tournament in summer 2025

The European Championship will be held from July 2nd to 27th, 2025. The host country will be Switzerland. The Swiss national team takes part in the European Qualifiers, but has a guaranteed place in the final round of the European Championship tournament.

As in England in 2022, a total of 16 teams will take part in the tournament, divided into 4 groups of four. The European Qualifiers, which have begun on April 5, 2024, will decide which 16 teams from Europe these will be.

Qualification phase

UEFA divided the entire qualification process into three phases:

  1. Nations League phase
  2. European Qualifiers league phase
  3. European Qualifiers play-offs

Nations League phase

The Nations League phase ended on February 28, 2024. The four group winners of League A contested a knockout round. In the final, Spain won against France 2-0. In the game for third place, Germany also beat the Netherlands 2-0.

The two finalists have qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in France. Since France qualifies as hosts anyway, Germany also gets a ticket as third place.

European Qualifiers league phase

After this Nations League phase and the associated promotions and relegations, the three leagues A, B and C were reorganized. The new distribution will look like this:

Liga A

Liga B

Liga C

The placements in the individual groups were played out on six match days between April 5 and July 16, 2024. The following teams qualified as first or second place:

Group A1: Italy, Netherlands
Group A2: Spain, Denmark
Group A3: France, England
Group A4: Germany, Iceland

Host Switzerland played in League B, but is automatically qualified as host. The remaining seven teams will be determined in the play-offs, which will take place between October and December 2024.

European Qualifiers - play-offs

A total of 28 teams from Leagues A, B and C will take part in the play-offs. In the first round in October 2024, the number of teams will be reduced to 14 teams through 14 knockout matches.
